Police Control Ahead (W3-4)
Justification: The
Police Control Ahead sign may be used in advance of a location where
traffic is controlled by a uniformed police officer. Its use should
be limited to locations where drivers do not have good sight distance to
the officer or would not expect police control. The W3-4 sign shall
be removed or covered when its message does not apply, or it shall be
supplemented with an Effective Hours Panel, W14-20.
Placement: When used, the W3-4 sign should be placed 250 to
750 feet in advance of the officer.

One Lane Bridge (W5-3)
The One Lane Bridge sign may
be used to identify two-way bridges having a clear roadway width of less
than 18 feet. In addition, the W5-3 sign may be used to identify
two-way bridges having a clear roadway width of 18 feet or more if the
approach roadway geometrics create an effective width so that vehicles can
not pass each other.

One Lane Underpass (W5-11)
The One Lane Underpass sign
may be used to identify two-way underpasses having a clear roadway width
of less than 18 feet. In addition, the W5-11 sign may be used to
identify two-way underpasses having a clear roadway width of 18 feet or
more if the approach roadway geometrics create an effective width so that
vehicles can not pass each other.

Expressway Ends (W6-5)
Justification:
The Expressway Ends sign will be authorized for use to warn of the end of
an extended length of an expressway and the beginning of a conventional
highway. The W6-5 sign should not normally be used for expressways
less than 5 miles in length. The term FREEWAY may be substituted for
EXPRESSWAY.
Placement: When used, one or two W6-5 signs should be
installed within the area approximately 1500 feet to 1 mile in advance of
the end of the expressway. The (
) Feet sign, W12-2-1, or the ( )
Mile(s) Sign, W12-2-2, should normally be used beneath the W6-5 sign.

Open Grate Bridge (W8-16)
The Open Grate Bridge sign
may be used in advance of open grate bridges to warn pedestrians and
cyclists to be cautious.

Roadway Subject To Flooding (W8-18)
Justification:
The Roadway Subject To Flooding sign will be authorized for use to warn
drivers that the roadway may periodically be flooded and become
nonpassable. The W8-18 sign should not be used as a substitute for
closing the roadway when the proper authorities are aware that the roadway
is flooded or may flood at any time.
Placement: The W8-18 sign should be placed in advance of the
area to which it applies. It may also be placed at the last
intersection prior to the area with either the (
) Feet sign, W12-2-1, or the ( )
Mile(s) Sign, W12-2-2, placed beneath the W8-18 sign.

Watch For Ice (W8-19)
Justification:
The Watch For Ice sign will be authorized temporary for use until the
condition is corrected where ice occasionally forms on the roadway during
the winter months due to surface or subsurface drainage or condensation
problems.
Placement: The W8-19 sign shall be placed in advance of the
occasionally icy condition. This sign shall be removed, covered, or
folded during the summer months.

Horsedrawn Vehicle (W11-11)
Justification:
The Horsedrawn Vehicle sign shall be authorized for use to warn of the
unexpected hazard of horsedrawn vehicles regularly crossing or using the
roadway.

Plant Entrance (W11-12)
Justification:
The Plant Entrance sign shall be authorized for use to denote a factory
which is adjacent to the highway, but not outside of built-up industrial
areas.
Its use shall be limited to locations where traffic conditions such as
approach speeds, visibility, and conflicts are such that a special warning
is desirable.

Park Entrance (W11-13)
Justification:
The Park Entrance sign shall be authorized for use to denote a driveway to
a park which is adjacent to the highway.
Its use shall be limited to locations where traffic conditions such as
approach speeds, visibility, and conflicts are such that a special warning
is desirable.

Cemetery Entrance (W11-14)
Justification:
The Cemetery Entrance sign shall be authorized for use to warn motorists
of entrances to cemeteries which are located adjacent to the highway.
Its use shall be limited to locations where traffic conditions such as
approach speeds, visibility, and conflicts are such that a special warning
is desirable.

County Home (W11-15)
Justification:
The County Home sign shall be authorized for use at locations where the
county home, or grounds are adjacent to the highway.
Its use shall be limited to locations where traffic conditions such as
approach speeds, visibility, and conflicts are such that a special warning
is desirable.

Hospital (W11-16)
Justification:
The Hospital sign shall be authorized for use to indicate an access point
to a hospital.
Its use shall be limited to locations where traffic conditions such as
approach speeds, visibility, and conflicts are such that a special warning
is desirable.

|
Church (W11-17)
Justification:
The Church sign shall be authorized for use to indicate an access point to
a church.
Its use shall be limited to locations where traffic conditions such as
approach speeds, visibility, and conflicts are such that a special warning
is desirable.

|
|
Driveway (W11-19)
The Driveway sign shall be
authorized for use to denote the presence of a driveway or alley at which
the sight distance is severely restricted.
|
|
|
Bridle Path (W11-20)
The Bridle Path sign shall be
authorized for use along roads where a number of horses normally walk
beside or cross the roadway.
|
|
|
Left Turns and Cross Traffic (W11-21)
The Left Turns and Cross
Traffic sign shall be authorized for use in advance of or within areas on
limited or noncontrolled multiple-lane roadways, which are contiguous to
full controlled roadways. Generally these roadways will have at
grade intersections, nonsignalized with an appreciable number of left
turning and cross traffic movements. The Advisory Mile Plate Sign,
W4-14, should be mounted below the sign.

No Winter Maintenance (W14-5)
Justification:
The No Winter Maintenance sign may be used on a roadway where winter snow
plowing, salting, or cindering activities are not performed. The
W14-5 sign may be removed, covered, or folded during seasons when these
activities would not normally be applicable.
Placement: The sign should be installed at the beginning of
the roadway where applicable.

Congested Area Next

Justification:
The Congested Area Next ( )
Miles sign will be authorized for use on expressways and freeways to warn
of unusually heavy traffic, particularly when interchanges are very
closely spaced.
Placement: The W14-6 sign may be placed in advance of and at
intervals throughout the congested area.

Watch For Stopped Vehicles (W14-7)
The Watch For Stopped
Vehicles sign will be authorized for use in advance of locations where
traffic queues frequently occur but are not anticipated by many drivers,
especially unfamiliar drivers.

New Traffic Patterns (W14-8)
Justification:
The New Traffic Patterns sign will be authorized for use as a temporary
sign on expressways and freeways to warn drivers that the travel lanes
have been revised. When the revision covers only a short distance,
the last line on the W14-8 sign may be revised to state "AHEAD."
Placement: When used, the W14-8 sign should be placed a
minimum of 775 feet in advance of the beginning of the section with
revised travel lanes.

Truck Weighing Ahead (W14-9)
Justification:
The Truck Weighing Ahead sign will be authorized for use in advance of a
mobile or semi permanent weighing operation. When used, the W14-9
sign shall be mounted at a minimum height of one foot above the road
surface.
Size: The standard size W14-9 sign shall be 36-inch by
36-inch on two-lane, two-way roadways and 48-inch by 48-inch on all other
roadways.

Fog Area (W14-10)
The Fog Area sign will be
authorized to warn drivers of the areas where small "pockets" of
fog frequently present a hazard. It may also be used to warn of
areas where smog, steam, or smoke frequently present a hazard.

Traffic Survey (W14-15)
The Traffic Survey sign may
be used in advance of a location where traffic is being diverted or
stopped for a transportation-related survey.

PA CleanWays
This non-profit organization
helps organizations and communities to keep their areas of Pennsylvania
free from litter and trash. Since PennDOT's Adopt-a-Highway program
only addresses state-maintained highways, PA CleanWays addresses any local
highway. When an organization adopts a section of highway to keep
clean, one of these signs are installed. |
